How to get a job whose back do you have -
Instructions to find a new line of work whose back do you have - The previous evening, President Obama conveyed the State of the Union location. He talked a ton about occupations and getting individuals back to work, however that isn't what roused this post. The President talked about a strategic about having the option to complete something BIG, on the grounds that you realize somebody has your back. This was the finish of the discourse: Perhaps the proudest belonging is the banner that the SEAL Team took with them on the mission to get container Laden. On it are every one of their names. Some might be Democrats. Some might be Republicans. Be that as it may, that doesn't make a difference. Much the same as it didn't make a difference that day in the Situation Room, when I sat close to Bob Gates â" a man who was George Bush's resistance secretary; and Hillary Clinton, a lady who ran against me for president. All that made a difference that day was the mission. Nobody pondered legislative issues. Nobody considered themselves. One of the youngsters engaged with the attack later revealed to me that he didn't merit credit for the mission. It just succeeded, he stated, in light of the fact that each and every individual from that unit carried out their responsibility â" the pilot who handled the helicopter that spun wild; the interpreter who shielded others from entering the intensify; the soldiers who isolated the ladies and youngsters from the battle; the SEALs who energized the steps. More than that, the mission just succeeded in light of the fact that each individual from that unit confided in one another â" on the grounds that you can't energize those steps, into murkiness and risk, except if you realize that there's somebody behind you, watching your back. So it is with America. Each time I see that banner, I'm reminded that our predetermination is sewed together like those fifty stars and those thirteen stripes. Nobody fabricated this nation all alone. This Nation is extraordinary in light of the fact that we constructed it together. This Nation is extraordinary in light of the fact that we filled in as a group. This Nation is extraordinary on the grounds that we get each other's backs. What's more, in the event that we hold quick to that reality, at this time of preliminary, there is no test excessively extraordinary; no crucial hard. For whatever length of time that we're participated in like manner reason, as long as we keep up our basic purpose, our excursion pushes ahead, our future is cheerful, and the condition of our Union will consistently be solid. So evident, I thought, when I heard those words. Who could envision dashing into that circumstance placing yourself into hurts way, with the heaviness of the world on your shoulders? What a stunning gathering of individuals who made their nation pleased that day. Ideally, your issues and difficulties dont appear as immense as that missionYou might be searching for a vocation, or you need to begin a business. Its extreme intense. You might be going only it. 5 tech trends every HR leader needs to know about in 2019 - Viewpoint Viewpoint careers advice blog
5 tech trends every HR leader needs to know about in 2019 - Viewpoint The volume and velocity of technology making its way onto the Human Resources scene over the past year have been somewhat of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we have technology delivering us with the solutions needed to automate mundane processes and free up our time for more high-value, âhumanâ tasks. On the other, we are finding ourselves inundated and unsure of which tech trends to try and wrap our heads around first! For an HR leader to thrive in the face of such monumental change, they will need to remain both anticipatory of the latest tech solutions to sweep the world of work, but also discerning of which ones would be viable within their business. With that in mind, which tech trends should every HR leader be considering in 2019? 1. Automation â" itâs coming, is your company ready? First off, this wouldnât be an HR tech trends blog if we didnât mention AI at the forefront! After all, it is inevitable that many repetitive tasks across all departments are likely to be replaced by automation. However, rather than fearing change and shying away from dealing with the impact, business and HR leaders must communicate the advantages to their workforce and begin embracing, discussing and getting ready for the changes it will bring. Any implementation needs to make absolute sense to employees, and leaders will need their buy-in to reap the full benefits. To make sure that happens, most organisations need to create a culture of openness, collaboration, and flexibility; both in the way the technology is deployed, but also how employees are trained on how to work with this technology. This takes me to my next point. 2. Learning as a skill The way we learn is evolving, because technology is moving at a pace which is no longer befitting of a one-off training course in a classroom environment. In fact, LinkedInâs 2018 Workplace learning report found that employees want a more personalised learning experience, whereby they can access a choice of training materials at the point of need, be it via webinars, interactive quizzes, infographics or ideally, a choice of the above and more. To give an example, customer generation specialist MVF offer their employees a £1,000 training budget per year, an unlimited book allowance and twice-monthly âlunch and learnâ sessions. They have also set up âacademiesâ where new starters can get the skills they need in a way that is best suited to their preferred learning style. Therefore if employers are to avoid a skills gap, HR leaders will need to think about how they are offering their employees the channels in-house that ensure they can upskill and reskill themselves. These channels need to accommodate micro or bite-sized as well as macro learning â" with the former being heavily driven by video-based content. Employers who recognise this will win in the talent stakes. 3. Messaging, communication, and collaboration â" is email dead? People are increasingly communicating with friends and family via messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Viber or even SMS â" but is this trend set to seep into our professional lives? Well, itâs estimated that over 500 million of us use chat software such as WhatsApp for work, and over half a million companies worldwide are now using instant messaging platforms such as Slack. We are also seeing the emergence of chat to self-serve on HR issues, from employees using chat applications to find quick answers to simple questions regarding holiday and benefits to HR professionals themselves handling high volume applications from candidates. The reality is that many of us want or expect to have the choice to interact on messaging platforms for the sake of expediencyâ" meaning communication via email may soon be outdated. 4. Employee experience â" the new employee engagement âEmployee experienceâ is emerging as the new collective term that encompasses the entire employee lifecycle at an organisation â" and how they feel about it. The journey begins before employment with the company starting with the employer brand, then through to onboarding, performance management, ongoing engagement, employee wellbeing, the importance of employee benefits and last but not least, the employee feedback loop. The cadence and methodology around how that feedback is collected are becoming more and more sophisticated, using AI and advanced data analytics to ensure that the focus is on outcomes that have the biggest impact. This takes me to my final point. 5. Data and analytics â" metrics matter now more than ever Organisations are taking advantage of the growing number of data resources available, in a bid to improve hiring and retention strategies. As such, we are seeing a growth in the number of HR departments deploying âdata-driven HRâ and âintelligent HRâ strategies. To give you an example of data-driven talent management and hiring in practice Gartner Analysts conducted a study for a financial services company in the US. They looked for a correlation between the performance of employees, the college they attended and the grades obtained at this college. Be that as it may, the online life site is also a useful asset for systems administration and taking part in a pursuit of employment. Consider it: How frequently have you seen a companion post that their organization is hoping to fill a position? What's more, what number of gatherings exist that are identified with your field? Much like the workplace water cooler or a social affair with companions, Facebook is a virtual get-together spot where individuals talk about children, pets, the news-and work, as well. Attempt these straightforward methodologies to utilize Facebook to encourage your pursuit of employment. Join Groups That Relate to Your Job Interests Utilize Facebook's inquiry capacity to discover gatherings of individuals discussing your industry. In case you're an advertiser, for example, have a go at looking showcasing. Once you've composed a catchphrase into the pursuit bar, hit the see all outcomes text, at that point pick the gatherings tab on the list items page. A few gatherings might be mystery or shut to allow just individuals identified with a subject to join. Request that companions and associates suggest the Facebook bunches they find valuable for systems administration or finding out about their businesses. Get a Facebook welcome from them, if necessary. You can likewise do an online hunt outside of Facebook-to see which Facebook bunches individuals suggest in your industry. Take a stab at putting Best Facebook bunches for [industry/field/work title] into a web search tool and see what springs up. Partake in the Groups You don't need to be a mediator of the gathering â" the individual who audits each post. In any case, plan to be a functioning part by routinely perusing the posts. Remark on posts when you have an assessment, exhortation, or a tip to share. You can likewise post yourself by sharing articles and photographs. Here are a few thoughts for how to take an interest: Remark on posts requesting guidance or compassion: Even something as straightforward as enjoying a post can get you saw by the gathering arbitrator and other members.Share an important report: Post fascinating news identified with the gathering is a simple method to take an interest. Ask icebreakers: You may post something like: My name is Sam and I went to SCAD as a material major before turning into a creation executive for TV appears. Simply inquisitive: how could you discover your way into this field?Ask questions: Group individuals are generally ready to respond to questions and offer exhortation. Before you pose an inquiry however, search the gathering's history to check whether it's been addressed. Solicitation help with your activity search: If you're searching for work in a specific area or to meet individuals in your city, you can post with these direct inquires. A few gatherings, for example, have rules against self-advancement, so you'll need to make a point to abstain from pushing your book, on the off chance that you've thought of one, or any items where you bring in cash. Normally, you'll see that most gatherings have only a few dynamic individuals and a great deal of prowlers â" people who read posts, and sometimes like the posts, yet once in a while remark. Be more dynamic than this quiet dominant part join (and start) the discussion. Attend In-Person Events On the off chance that individuals post about systems administration occasions meetings or savor social affairs your territory think about joining in. You'll as of now share something practically speaking with different participants, which can make casual chitchat simpler. The associations shaped by meeting somebody in person will in general be more grounded than those made with online connections. Leave Groups That Aren't Active or Helpful With shut gatherings, you won't have the option to see the quality and amount of posts before joining. Try not to spare a moment to leave any Facebook bunch you join that isn't useful or is jumbling up your channel with content that isn't significant. Simply consider it withdrawing from an advertising pamphlet. Spam won't further your pursuit of employment; it'll just gobble up your important time. You will probably get bunches together with significant data, where you can shape associations. Structure Connections The greater part of your companions on Facebook are most likely individuals you've met, all things considered. Be that as it may, as you connect with individual gathering individuals, you may find you share a great deal practically speaking even more than the subject of the gathering. Inside jokes can frame. Individual subtleties may get shared. This is the way toward turning out to be companions on the web. When you've had a couple of cooperations on remark strings past simply loving each other's remarks it might feel sensible to expand the relationship past the gathering, and associate as companions. You may likewise send direct messages to individuals in gatherings, utilizing Facebook's delegate usefulness. Be mindful, be that as it may. Not at all like LinkedIn, a great many people do relate Facebook with companions not professional networking-so you would prefer not to mishandle the errand person usefulness. Ensure Your Profile Doesn't Have Anything Inappropriate The main role of Facebook is connecting with loved ones. When you're in a gathering, however, you should know that individuals navigate to your profile page once you post. What will they see? Youd better make sure your profile doesn't have anything unmistakably amateurish appearing (i.e., pictures of you alcoholic, shocking outfits, disdainful or cruel language, curses, and so forth.). These are acceptable strategies to follow in case you're work looking through anyway, because recruiters and recruiting managers are known to check profiles as part of their pre-talk with prep work. Spring Cleaning Your Online Presence ePropelr
Spring Cleaning Your Online Presence ePropelr Spring Cleaning Your Online Presence Spring is officially here! Most of us think of spring cleaning as organizing cabinets and closets, but one area often overlooked is our online presence. With many people now passing the 10-year mark on Facebook and LinkedIn, there is a lot of content about us online that is out-of-date. How long has it been since you cleaned up your social media pages? Networking is the best way to land a new job, so use this checklist to help you present a professional and career-driven presence to your network. 1. Define Your Personal BrandYou are a brand. People are buying into what you post and how you react to different things online. How you present yourself matters. Think of a few keywords or phrases that youâd like people to associate you with (professional, active, well educated, subject matter expert, socially conscious, fearless, motivated) and make sure your content reflects the image you want to portray. 2. Clean Up Your ContentSocial media platforms can become like a messy closet. Emp loyers will check you out online, so this is even more of a reason to make sure your social media presence reflects positively on you. Organize your online content and delete things that no longer reflect where you want to go in your personal life or your career. If youâre using an old photo photo from Halloween 2008 as your profile photo, itâs time to change it. 3. Update Your Bio or âAbout Meâ sectionI shudder to think of what was in the âAboutâ section when I first joined Facebook 12 years ago. Social media platforms have changed so much over the years. If it has been a while since you last updated your LinkedIn summary, or the âAboutâ section on Facebook, now is a good time to take a closer look. Make sure your words and photos reflect where you are at this point in your life. 4. Tidy Your Contacts GroupsThe value of social media in a job search is the networking element. Each platform has a slightly different audience and your âfriendsâ or followers can be leveraged in ways to help you advance your career and job prospects. If you're trying to break out of one industry and into another, update your groups to reflect that. Your social network should have a strong base of people you really know and who you think are good people. If you find that your network is full of people you donât personally know or talk to anymore, itâs time to clean house. You can definitely reconnect with older contacts, but you can also seek out new connections and try to gain new networking prospects and inspiration.

Client Case Study Colleen Haggerty - When I Grow Up
Customer Case Study Colleen Haggerty - When I Grow Up Um, do you realize that Ive trained several ladies since I began offering dream vocation direction in 2008? What's more, that these ladies are freakin demigods, leaving soul-sucking occupations and venturing to the far corners of the planet and propelling inventive, grown-up organizations and basically accomplishing work that accommodates their way of life objectives? Well ya do now and youll hear their accounts firsthand in my Client Case Studies series! At 57, Colleen is a recently propelled Forgiveness Coach that as of now has a TEDx talk an independently published journal added to her repertoire! This Client Case Study is particularly for those of you who have revealed to yourself that its past the point where it is possible to have an adult business you love. Colleen is doing it, and you can, as well! For what reason did you choose to work with me, an imaginative profession mentor? I am a free individual, so when I understood I wasn't propelling my training business as I needed, I needed to get genuine with myself. I was giving a great deal of thought to being a mentor, yet I wasn't generally accomplishing the work. I was unable to arrive on a specialty. I attempted to convince myself not to require a specialty. Be that as it may, without a specialty, it was a test do plan my site without anybody to target it to. Showcasing was troublesome on the grounds that I didn't have anybody explicit to market to. Additionally, I was loaded up with question about this way. I was truly experiencing difficulty claiming the legitimacy of myself as a mentor as the suitability of instructing. I moved toward another mentor to work with me and, in the wake of enlightening her regarding myself, she stated, My qualities lie somewhere else. You have to work with Michelle. She's the person who can enable you to dispatch. So I took one of your free online classes about how to set myself up to leave my old employment for another one. I loved the wonderful way you separated the means; I enjoyed your strong natureâ"and I loved your spunky character. I realized you would carry bliss to the procedure! What were you accomplishing work-wise when we begun our meetings? I was, and still am, low maintenance official chief of a small non-benefit that underpins youngsters and families who are lamenting a demise. I've been in the non-benefit field for a long time at this point and it's in my blood. What was your greatest takeaway from our time together? What? You need me to pick just one? Inconceivable, Michelle! In the first place, you brought into the light what I experienced difficulty seeing for a considerable length of time: my specialty. I've expounded on this specialty, I did a TEDx talk about this specialty, yet I've tread lightly around it, incapable to claim it as mine. It has been gigantic that you've helped me to grasp being a Forgiveness Coach. Second, I felt seen. Possessing that I'm a Forgiveness Coach is enormous for me, yet to you, it was an easy decision. You didn't get the decisions that I did. You perceived the truth about me. I attempted to put on the brakesâ"No, no, pause. I can't do that! and you simply propped me up. Much obliged to you for helping me to acknowledge that I have this significant work to share. Third, you tenderly yet solidly held my toes to the fire which caused me to complete sh*t! Blessed Moly! In only six meetings I asserted my specialty, I patched up my site, I made an offer and I began working with my first customer. In our underlying conference call, that is the thing that you said would occur in those initial a month and a half. I'll concede now, I was skepticalbut I did it. Also, fourth, I don't think you at any point unequivocally said this, however a Titanic Take Away has been: this is all on me. Hearing your anecdote about being in an occupation that made you truly sick and how you arranged and plotted on getting out is uplifting. Yet, no one did that yet you. So you've been a tutor just as a mentor. Indeed, we as a whole have a network and individuals who bolster us, yet now I genuinely realize that when I accomplish the work, results occur. Was there something else you attempted to do as a vocation between the time we halted our meetings and what you accomplish for work now? Assuming this is the case, how could it illuminate your present business? No What might you tell somebody now that was from your point of view when we originally begun cooperating? Whats your best tip to permit them to get by doing what they love? Sincerely? I'd advise them to put resources into themselves and work with you! In any case, if that is not likely at this moment, I'd propose that they make an arrangement and plot out their leave system. Yet, for the most part, I'd instruct them to advise their Inner Critic to quiet the damnation down and simply jump on carrying on with the existence they need. I'm 57 years of age and I wish that I'd quit giving my Inner Critic such a great amount of intensity for such a long time. Life is short. Do what you love. Whats not too far off for your business? Marry love to catch wind of any up and coming contributions or objectives! I have a Vision Board Workshop coming up January fourteenth here in my little village in the farthest northwest corner of the US. I love encouraging workshops and supporting individuals to go internal. What's more, since I've worked with you, I'll be striking and pleased to reveal to them that I am a Forgiveness Coach and told them how they can function with me. I'd prefer to offer The Forgiveness Sessionsâ"a 10-week program that strolls individuals through the means of acknowledgment and absolutionâ"to your peeps at a 33% markdown. They can go to my site and put Michelle Rocks in the remarks.

Including Your Startup, Self Employment or Business on a Resume (Examples) - Updated
Including Your Startup, Self Employment or Business on a Resume (Examples) - Updated So you worked on a startup/small business for a while and it either didnt go well, or, it got acquired. (We wrote a good post here on resume tips for small business owners) Either way, youre looking to update your resume and get back in the job hunt. If you approach includinga startup in your resume the right way, itcould be very effective. There are certain situations where you should not mention your startup which well go through later on. Weve got you covered! Well show you exactly how to include your startup on your resume the right way. Should Ilist mystartup or business on myresume? Absolutely! I dont know why it even comes off as a concern for some job seekers. Working on a startup or small business shows a lot of effective skills and traits regardless of your outcome. It shows leadership, critical thinking and determination. Most employersalso like to see an entrepreneurial mindset in their employees, because entrepreneurship is all about delivering good service and making money/profit. The only drawback you may face is that its usually unverifiable. You can claim marvelous skills and knowledge you acquired but it would be nearly impossible to verify for an employer. You would really have to prove yourself during the interview. Should Ilist myfailed startup or business on myresume? Yes, the outcome doesnt really matter. The chances of success for your first startup are really against you. Even the most successful entrepreneurs had many failed attempts until they found success. You shouldensure that you list the more relevant skills and knowledge you acquired while working on your startup. When should you not list your startup or business? The only time you wouldnt want to list your startup is when youre still activeor you were in the same industry as the companyyoure applying for. Why? You dont want to list a startup that youre still running because if it eventually takes off, your hiring manager would expect you to leave. The last thing an employer wants to do is spend all that money hiring someone who may leave in a few months. They also want you focused on your current job and not your startup. You also dont wantto mention your startup if its in the same exact industry. The hiring manager will think that you either want to grow your knowledge or obtain trade secrets to grow your own startup. Even though these situations may not be your goal, its best to leave your startup off your resume in this case and focus on other relevant skills and work experience. If you have a large gap in your resume because of the startup you may want to use the functional resume format. You can read more here on how to deal with employment gaps on your resume. Including self-employment on a resume This information would be the same for self-employment as well. Try not to over exaggerate your skills and knowledge in regards to your self-employment. A few short bullet points of relevant tasks is just fine as its really unverifiable to the employer. How To Include a Startup or Self-EmploymentOn A Resume Including your startup or business on a resume would be very similar to the way you would include any other work experience. Follow these steps when including a startup in your work experience: Step 1 Include the name of your company and the dates you worked on it. Include your role which would typically be founder, co-founder or CEO. Step 2 Look at the job description and come up with 4-6 pointswhere your skills and knowledge from your startup relate in some way to the position. Step 3 List them inbullet points andword iteffectively so its relevant and stands out to the hiring manager. (Need help writing your resume? Check out this post on the best resume writing services.) Startup or Self-Employment On Resume Example: Including your startup, self-employment or business on a cover letter. Its really hard to emphasize your enthusiasm to join a company after a failed startup on your resume. This is why a cover letter is a great place to state your case. Remember that one of the biggest questions the hiring manager will have on his mind is how long until this guy starts his own company again? This would be better explained if youre called in for the interview. You want to emphasize that you want to stay and grow with the company for the long term. There are some points you should include on the cover letter which will help lead to the interview. You want to emphasize these twopoints on a cover letter: Youre excited for the opportunity to work for thecompany and be part of a teamYour skills and knowledge gained from your startup are relevant and perfect for the position Here is an example: After working on my startup XYZ for the past 2 years, Ive gained a deep knowledge of marketing, customer acquisition and sales. Im very enthusiastic about joining [company name] where Im confident that my skills and knowledge willhelp grow the company for the long term. I feel my experience fits in perfectly with the position open and would be grateful for the opportunity to interview. Should you mention why the startup or business failed? You only want to bring attention to it ifit was acquired. If it failed for other reasons, its best to leave it off your resume. You should come up with a solid answer answer ifthey ask you why it failed at the interview. Good luck with your job search!

IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training
IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training Business and designing understudies at Brigham Young University are working together on a special ball preparing framework that utilizations movement sensors and different gadgets to naturally follow shots and give moment criticism, permitting a player to screen execution. BYU will carry its innovation idea to Indianapolis and the seventh Annual ASME Innovation Showcase (IShow) on June 22, where the understudy group will contend with nine different finalists in a presentation of imagination, specialized creativity, development, and pioneering and business discernment. The IShow will be held related to the ASME Annual Meeting, which happens June 21-26 at the JW Marriott Indianapolis. Named The Shot Coach, the BYU framework comprises of three gadgets - a wristband, an electronic box connected to the backboard, and a cell phone App - working as one to follow shots and immediately transmit information to the player or mentor. The lightweight elastic wristband on the players shooting hand is outfitted with cutting edge sensors that track the situation of the wrist all through the movement of a shot. We have structured the wristband with a computerized compass and other propelled sensors that remake the specific direction of a players wrist during the time spent shooting, said Josh Bennett, a mechanical designing understudy at BYU and individual from the six-man group introducing at the ASME IShow. The wristband additionally keeps data on the players position anyplace on the court. The crate mounted to the edge on the backboard contains a movement sensor that tracks fruitful shots, just as an accelerometer that monitors the one of a kind vibrations of both edge and board on missed shots. Here and there, shots are missed on the grounds that they are too solid and different occasions since they come up somewhat short, Bennett clarified. Our container screens this data. A Bluetooth transmitter in the case remotely transmits the data to any cell phone or tablet, permitting the player or mentor momentary criticism. The Shot Coach App conveys measurements and visual maps on different parts of each shot, remembering area for the court, direction to the container, and other basic information. The target of our framework is to give the player or mentor the sort of input that can be applied to upgrades in all parts of the game, from basic choices to address structure, said Bennett. Albeit a mentor can get the criticism, the BYU group has made The Shot Coach to make improvement estimates open to the players themselves. Brigham Youngs promoting system focuses on the adolescent and secondary school b-ball circuit, which does not have the assets for individual mentors and for the sorts of costly top of the line investigation utilized in university b-ball programs and the National Basketball Association. As indicated by Bennett, The Shot Coach will cost around $250. The idea for The Shot Coach was propelled in January 2013 by a group comprising of promoting and money majors, software engineers, and electrical engineers. At the ASME IShow, the understudies must communicate in the language of innovation trailblazers and business people, endeavoring to persuade a board of effective financial speculators and protected innovation specialists that their framework can be planned, fabricated, and sold in the business commercial center. The genuine test for the members in ASME IShow is to structure an item or framework that shows potential in the more extensive commercial center, said Thomas Loughlin, the official executive of ASME. ASME IShow is an extraordinary trial of an understudies designing abilities and business bent. Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom CIOs Treasure the Old While Bringing in the New
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom CIOs Treasure the Old While Bringing in the New IT leaders including Miami-Dade County database manager Sue Camner, Wal-Mart CIO Karenann Terrell, and NSM Insurance Group CIO Brendan OâMalley, share their views on effectively managing legacyIT. Miami-Dade Countyâs Sue Camner According to GCNâs Stephanie Kanowitz, Floridaâs Miami-Dade County IT department faced a tough choice. One of its middleware stacks had reached end of life, and officials could either upgrade or get rid of it and convert the forms and reports applications on it to two other stacks. County database manager Sue Camner decided to go with the second option. The county received assistance from legacy IT modernization firm Morphis to help with the conversions as it did away with its Oracle Application Server (OAS). Oracle had stopped supporting this server a few years back, and Miami-Dade needed to upgrade to Oracle WebLogic. Unfortunately, that suite provides a lot of functionality Camnerâs team didnât need. âWeâd have to have the servers and all the resources to support this application just for this small piece,â she said. âIt didnât seem to be cost effective.â Kanowitz explained that because Miami-Dade has two other middleware stacks â" IBMâs WebSphere for Java-based apps and Microsoftâs IIS for .NET applications â" the department decided to convert the Oracle Forms and Reports code to work on one of those stacks. The move would save the county money by removing a stack and all its related maintenance. âOnce all of the applications are out of OAS, we can get rid of that whole infrastructure â" the servers and the storage, the licensing, everything involved in that stack â" and just migrate everything to one of the other two,â Camner said. And, users arenât lost because the new programs look much like the legacy applications. Miami-Dade is experiencing decreased costs and improved security as a result of the modernization. Since the technology is tighter, the county is in a much better position to protect its data. Wal-Martâs Karenann Terrell For its part, retail giant Wal-Mart isnât getting rid of its legacy systems anytime soon. At Information Weekâs recent conference, Wal-Mart CIO Karenann Terrell said she prefers to refer to legacy IT systems as classic. âClassic is respectful for the people who keep the lights on,â Information Weekâs Chris Murphy reported the CIO as saying. At present, Wal-Mart is undertaking a major IT modernization. But one of Terrellâs chief priorities is to keep engaging those who are operating legacy environments as well as those who are transforming them. âBoth are equally valuable but for different reasons,â Terrell said. âDealing with legacy IT environments, and particularly with how well companies connect legacy systems to their modern, often customer-facing mobile and cloud environments, will make or break some companies.â There have, of course, been situations where the âclassicâ systems have had to be retired. âThere are some no-brainer improvements weâve had to take action on,â Terrell told Deloitte University Press for its article on re-imagining core systems. âFor example, we had applications with kernels built around unsupported operating systems. We had to get rid of them.â But, she added: âOur IT strategy is not about reacting to the technology trend of the moment. Iâm sometimes asked, âWhy donât you move everything to the cloud?â My answer is because thereâs nothing wrong with mainframes; they will likely always play a part in our solution stack. Moreover, thereâs not enough dark fiber in the world to meet our transaction volumes and performance needs.â At Wal-Mart, modernization is a process rather than a project. It doesnât have a beginning and an end. Itâs usually not a matter of throwing out an entire system all at once, but rather evolving it as new trends and capabilities emerge. For more examples, read the rest of the piece at QuickBases Fast Track blog.

4 Ways to Keep a Recruiters Attention for More Than 6 Seconds - Classy Career Girl
4 Ways to Keep a Recruiters Attention for More Than 6 Seconds Youve probably heard that a recruiter spends an average of 6 seconds looking at a resume before deciding if an applicant is suitable for the jobbut do you know why? Its a popular recruitment technique known as eye tracking. At the end of the day, if a recruiter has to go through 100 applications for a job, theyre not going to sit and read through every single one. However, there are a couple of techniques you can use to guide your reader into feeling compelled to read more and see whether youâre the right person for the job, giving you the maximum opportunities to secure the job of your dreams. With a little bit of time and effort, you can revive your resume from one of the most torturous aspects of the professional world into a document that will secure your future. 4 Ways to Keep a Recruiters Attention for More Than 6 Seconds 1. Put Your Best Accomplishments At The Top Your achievements are what defines you as a person (okay, not really, but on a resume they are.) They brought you to success in your past positions, which is why you feel youre suitable for the job youre applying for. When structuring your past achievements, for example, when listing out your responsibilities for every job, place your best accomplishments at the top. This is the first thing your future recruiter will see and is the feature that will draw them into the rest of your CV. 2. Remember Youâre Human When it comes to resumes, itâs best to remember that you are trying to describe yourself, and (as you well know) you donât spend your whole life working (unless you do, in which case, refer to our articles on self-care and love yourself.) Youâve got personality, ambition, and traits that make you the person you are, and this should be evident in your resume. Simon Romero, a writer from Paper Fellows explains, âThe hobbies and out-of-work area of the CV is one of the most neglected. By being honest and including things such as any side projects youâre working, you can give the recruiter a real insight into who you are and what youâve got to give. All this combined with your work history builds up an accurate image of who you areâ. [RELATED: The 13 Best-Kept Resume Secrets] 3. Accuracy and Precision One of the biggest turn-offs for recruiters reading through pile after pile of resumes is the quality of the resume itself. Itâs all well and good creating a 2,500-word document detailing the ins and outs of your past (not actually though, please dont this), but if itâs riddled with mistakes, the recruiter is throwing your resume straight into the garbage. Thomas Walsh, head of HR at Ox Essays says, âDuring our days, we review countless CVs for various positions, 40% of which we place straight in the ârejectâ pile. On paper, weâve seen some really amazing applicants, but being concise in your work is such an important trait to have. A lot of the mistakes we see could be simply resolved with a quick read through, something most of these applicants havenât done, which just shows how much care they have put in.â 4. Avoid Traditional Buzzwords The final aspect of making your resume stand out from the crowd is to actually prove youre different. If you can keep a recruiter on your resume for more than those 6 seconds, your chances of securing the job increase tenfold. Try to avoid using traditional keywords such as âmotivatedâ and âresponsible.â The vast majority of resumes will have these words, making yours seem like any other. Mastering the art of creating a good resume can take a couple of attempts to get right but once itâs there, itâs a skill that will stay with you for life.
